Docs · API keys
API keys.
The CLI and the MCP server sign in to your account with an API key. Keys come with every plan, free included.
Make a key
- Sign in and open Developers in the sidebar.
- Name the key after where it will live, like “Laptop” or “GitHub Actions”, and create it.
- Copy it straight away. It starts with
act_and is shown only once.
Use it
Set it as an environment variable, and the CLI and MCP server pick it up:
export ACTUITY_API_KEY=act_...Or pass it once with --api-key. For CI, store it as a secret; see CI checks.
Keep it safe
- A key acts as you: it can scan, read your fixes and use your plan’s agent analyses.
- It can’t change your plan or billing, make other keys, delete your account or approve a site for agent analyses.
- Don’t commit it to a repository or paste it in a shared file.
- If one leaks, revoke it under Developers. It stops working at once.
AI apps like claude.ai and ChatGPT don’t need a key: they sign in with the connector instead.
